Pro Sound News Europe: "Relaunched flagship Yamaha store pushes pro angle"

Yamaha Music London (YML), the flagship store of the music and technology giant, has expanded in both size and scope. After an extensive refit, the shop re-opened for business last week following a special evening event for dealers, VIP customers, press and friends. The business – owned by Yamaha since 1980 but known as ‘Chappell of Bond Street’ until late 2013, despite being in Soho’s Wardour Street – now sports a professional music basement (pictured, bottom) featuring a music stage, instruments for stage, studio and stadiums and reportedly “the largest display of Yamaha guitars in Europe”.

YML store manager Nigel Hill said of the basement refurb: “The Pro Sounds [sic] area will enable customers to watch demos and play the guitars and drums for themselves before they buy – bringing to life the Yamaha goal of sharing our passion for sound, technology and performance.”Yamaha Music London launch night, 152-160 Wardour Street, London W1F 8YA. 29 January 2015

Available to view (and buy!) at YML are: HS and MSP Series studio monitors; MG, 01V and EMX Series mixers; various ranges of PA speakers; Steinberg Cubase DAW software and peripherals; the Line 6 StageScape mixing system; and the Pocketrak Recorders (as highly regarded by your correspondent!). The ground floor has also recently expanded the Digital Piano and Keyboard area.

In his welcome speech at the relaunch bash, Yamaha Music UK managing director Mark Rolfe noted that not only was the company launching the store, but “also a range of services and support activities. One in particular area that I would like to highlight one of the cornerstones of our corporate beliefs: education.”

He went on to list playing initiatives, scholarships and other platforms which Yamaha supports, making it one of the biggest private educators in the UK.

“If this strikes a chord with you and you share our vision, we are looking for like-minded partners to collaborate with,” he told guests.

At the official launch, Yamaha UK’s managing director, Mark Rolfe, told Music Industry News, “I believe the British consumer has become a little more demanding in recent times. Not just in the MI industry, but across the high street. Take Apple, for example, and the way they are spreading their brand and the quality of their products; it’s tied into a store experience. They showcase their products in the finest of environments with staff trained by Apple. That’s what we’re doing here at Yamaha Music London. We want to showcase Yamaha products in the best way we can.”
